Lake Powell, Glen Canyon Area { 35 images } Created 7 Dec 2015

Lake Powell, a significant recreational area in northern Arizona and southern Utah, has resulted from the damming of the Colorado River by the Glen Canyon Dam. Of course Lake Powell is named by the famous John Wesley Powell, soldier, scientist and explorer who was the first outsider to traverse the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The scenery along the lake itself along with its side canyons is truly beautiful. A visit to Rainbow Bridge, the largest natural bridge in the world, and held sacred to native Americans is an awesome experience. The dam itself generates hydroelectric power, and the turbines within the dam can be visited. The town of Page, Arizona was originally built during construction of the dam, and remains a viable town with a resident population, and provides services to visitors to the area.
